Our one-year training allows you to quickly start working as a fully qualified teacher.

After your 12 months of training, you’ll start on a qualified teacher’s starting salary of at least £30,000.

You’ll benefit from initial teacher training that’s developed by Teach First and delivered by local Ascend teacher development experts.

You‘ll have year-long support from a subject mentor and a lead mentor. They’ll train you and oversee your progress throughout.

We are delighted to partner with Teach First to deliver our Newham Community SCITT programme.  Teach First is a national charity dedicated to nurturing teachers and leaders who are passionate about making a real difference where it’s needed most.

Our SCITT programme is designed for people who want to dive into teaching from day one. It’s a one-year course that blends hands-on experience with expert training, allowing you to develop your teaching skills directly in the classroom. This programme is perfect if you’re eager to learn on the job while positively impacting your local community.

A co-educational community school in Canning Town, Newham. Our aim is for all students, regardless of their starting point, to achieve their full potential in their academic outcomes as well as their personal development. Situated in Plaistow, east London, and is a specialist school in music and science.  We are a mixed comprehensive secondary school and welcome both students and staff from a diverse multicultural background. With around 1,350 students, Lister is a larger than the average school in Newham.  All our students have the opportunity to study a broad curriculum, which will ensure they are ready for the top colleges and universities. We have excellent teaching in the traditional academic subjects, and a broad and rich curriculum with our students having the chance to study Art, Computing, Photography, Spanish, Business Studies, Dance, Drama, and much more.

FAQ’s

Our programme is open to anyone with an undergraduate degree, whether you are a recent graduate or considering a career change.

If you are interested in a career in education and would like to experience life in a Newham Community Learning school, we would be happy to hear from you. You can arrange a visit day to see teaching in action, meet our students, and speak with our current trainee and early career teachers. This provides a valuable insight into what it is like to train and teach within an NCL school.

To be eligible to apply you will need:

  • An undergraduate degree or equivalent.
  • To demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the subject you are applying to teach, either through your degree qualification, your A Levels or relevant experience.
  • Grade 4 (C) or above in English and Maths GCSEs, or equivalent qualification. To teach Primary, you will also need Grade 4 (C) or above in Science GCSE.

We will not consider candidates with pending GCSEs. Functional skills qualifications are not equivalent to maths and English GCSEs. Most equivalency test providers are accepted. You will need to have passed your GCSE equivalency test before applying to our programme; we will not be able to process your application until you have passed.

You will be registered as a full-time student throughout the programme so have access to lots of student benefits, as well as a student loan to cover your fees. Depending on your subject and qualifications, you may also be eligible for a bursary or grant to support you throughout your training.
